I know, I know. I’m always complaining about the lack of seamanship.
So this is a short tutorial about how to let your boat sail itself.
No auto pilot. No wind vane, or electronics, just seamanship.

All boats have different sailing characteristics. The hull used on my boat, a Cape Dory, was copied from the hull you foundUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137631669446462135.post-19993651874159335172020-09-02T18:07:00.011-04:002020-09-29T10:21:29.459-04:00My Summer of COVID
I’ll admit it. I’m lucky.
Iv’e been able to continue my career with minor interruptions this year.
Yes, I’ve had friends and clients who had died from this pandemic.
Yes, I’m earning less. Yes, my wife is working less.
But because of what I do for a living…I have savings.
All told, I’m doing OK. I’m lucky. Not smart. Just lucky.

I’m not gonna' lie to you. Getting to sail in January without gloves was a treat. It was freakishly warm last weekend. And windsurfing is just less tiring without mittens. And yet.
I like sailing in the winter. I’m not as hard core as I was ten years ago. I draw the line in the high 30’s. OK …closer to 40. But, I like sailing in the winter. I love my 5 or 6 millimeter wetsuit. Last month, my friends and I were fortunate enough to be invited and attend the World Premier of “The Longest Wave”. This was a documentary about Robby Naish.

To my friends and I, Robby was, is, and will always be “The King”. Though he is a few years younger than we are. For us he defined the sport of Windsurfing.

I appreciate your concern. But you worry about you, and I’ll worry about me.
If you surf and/or windsurf on Long Island you understand. You have been following storms and weather patterns long before App’s and websites like Surfline, Magic Seaweed, iwindsurf, or live stream beach cam’s ever existed.

I like the idea of an electric outboard.
The biggest problem though, is battery storage. The larger Torqeedo Cruise 2.0, or an Elco is expensive. They work as well as an old two stroke. But, because they rely on standard 12 volt technology, they only really work if you stay at a slip and can plug in to recharge every night. Or if you have a very robust Solar, or wind Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137631669446462135.post-12106312552965846212019-05-01T10:13:00.000-04:002019-05-28T10:21:32.268-04:00soon 2020 release date
So I've re-powered my sailboat to an electric outboard.
When I purchased my last van I attempted to buy an electric van, but the cost was prohibitively expensive. $150,000 for a Chevy.
But this is coming out next year. I wonder how much?
There have been a few after-market conversions...but boy they are expensive.
This one is by far my favorite.

So I haven’t had the time to address any off Segue’s issues yet this year. I’ve been busy.
I have been working too hard the last few Springs, and missed being in the OBX.
This year has been a little rough on me . So I decided to go anyway.
Since the drive is long and I want Lauralee to come out to the beach with me more often I had some work to do?
Basically I was given a list. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137631669446462135.post-42798282880215000172019-03-10T20:53:00.002-04:002019-03-10T20:53:20.456-04:00OBX WIND

So here’s the thing about good windsurfing photos of your self.
When you first start out…It’s a novelty. So you spend the money for a new Go Pro, or Soloshot.

Let me preface this by saying that I am not trying to be a contrarian. It’s just that I have been bothered or troubled by peoples perception of watermen my whole life.Bum, dude, zen, chill, agro, extreme, STOP!Some of us are just connected to the ocean. Happy and Healthy New Year for us all.
I am forwarding a passage from the NYS DEC’s Saltwater Fishing & Boating Newsletter.
This is important for two reasons…
When Windsurfing on a Sound, Bay, Lake, or Estuary; NYS treats a Windsurfer as if it is a boat. That’s right we are being grouped right in with Kayakers, and SUP’ers, So the lifejacket, PFD issue is a big deal right now.

Yes, I am fully aware that my carbon footprint on this earth could be smaller. But I am comfortable with my choices. I understand that we all balance convenience, personal cost, and Planetary cost against each other. Just as I will never convince some of you that driving a giant 4X4 Van on the beach is a good thing.
